Civil War enthusiasts and others will be treated to a weekend schedule of events aimed at presenting a "living history" of the era. Decatur's 750-acre municipal Point Mallard Park will again host the annual event. An expected group of about 200 reenactors will transform the park into battlefields and period field camps.
September Skirmish events are dedicated to Generals John Hunt Morgan and Joseph "Fighting Joe" Wheeler, both of whom played prominently in the War Between the States and in local history. John Hunt Morgan was born in nearby Huntsville and organized the infamous "Morgan's Raiders," an elusive calvary unit which wreaked havoc behind Union lines. Gen. Wheeler played a prominent role at the Battle of Shiloh and other wartime events before settling on a plantation near Courtland. Decatur was the site of several skirmishes such as the ones to be reenacted over the Labor Day weekend.
At times during the Civil War the city was occupied by Federal troops. The weekend begins with a candlelight tour of the camps Friday night from p.m. Events continue with mock battles between Union and Confederate troops staged at 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. These battles are both of approximately one hour's duration.
Camps will once again be opened to the public in the afternoons. During these open camp sessions visitors can speak with the re-enactors and of Kin and Romance and Revenge. The civic group Citizens for a Better Bridgeport will serve barbecue and other refreshments. A firework display is planned after the concert. Several surprise guests are scheduled to perform.
