They journeyed to the Chain of Rocks Bridge in St. Louis.

The bridge spans the Mississippi River connecting Missouri with Illinois. It is the longest foot bridge in the world. It is one mile and 60 feet in length according to one of the conservation agents. Patriot was rescued from the river by fishermen when its nest got too heavy for the tree to hold and fell into the water. Its lungs were damaged by the water and they thought it would die. The bird weighs more than 10 pounds and has a seven foot wing span. The handler had to prop up his gloved hand with the eagle on it upon a 2 inch diameter pole during his talk. The Civil War Reenactment group had a mock set up and the classroom got to visit and view their equipment and costumes.

But he is perhaps best known for his highprofile defeats on campaign finance reform and the 1998 tobacco settlement, and his GOP presidential rival, Texas Gov. George, W.

Bush, is portraying him as a do-nothing lawmaker rather than the successful reformer he claims to be. McCain said Friday he has succeeded during his 17 years in Congress in reforming Washington politics and helping to cut government regulation of business. "I've passed more legislation than any other senator in the last session of McCain contended. The record shows McCain successfully backed laws banning senators from taking lobbyists' gifts, reducing the "earnings test' that cuts Social Security benefits for the working elderly and giving the president line-item veto authority (although the Supreme Court later struck down the veto measure). McCain also has worked to block taxes on Internet commerce and has helped pressure TV networks to make their ratings system more understandable.

At least one Bush supporter, a Senate colleague of McCain, said the governor's criticism was off base. "It's not fair to say McCain has been an ineffective senator," said Bob Bennett, R- Utah.
