Juliette Binoche (b. 1964) is one of France’s most distinguished and celebrated actresses who exuded grace and casual elegance for over four decades on camera. She’s known for her versatility, depth, and her impressive body of work. She grew up in an artistic family—her father, Jean-Marie Binoche, was a sculptor, actor and theater director; her mother, Monique Yvette Stalens, was a teacher and actress (her Polish-born maternal grandfather, André Stalens, was of Belgian and French descent). This creative environment profoundly influenced her, shaping her path towards the arts from an early age.

INTERVIEWS WITH ACTORS AND FILMMAKERSINTERVIEWS WITH ACTORS AND FILMMAKERS (1)Binoche began acting in her teenage years and, for a while, she received formal training at the Conservatoire National Supérieur d’Art Dramatique de Paris (a.k.a. the National Conservatory of Dramatic Arts), one of France’s foremost drama schools. Her early career in French cinema was marked by a series of collaborations with acclaimed directors such as Leos Carax, André Téchiné and Jacques Doillon, which quickly solidified her position as a rising star. One of her breakthrough roles came in 1985 with Jean-Luc Godard’s “Je Vous salue, Marie” (a.k.a. “Hail Mary”), a controversial, contemporary reworking of the Virgin birth. Her performance in the film garnered significant attention and paved the way for more challenging and high-profile roles.

Her first major international success came in 1988 when she starred in her first English-language film, “The Unbearable Lightness of Being,” an erotic classic directed by Philip Kaufman. Based on Milan Kundera’s 1984 novel, the film saw Binoche cast opposite Daniel Day-Lewis and Lena Olin, and her nuanced portrayal of Czech protest photographer Tereza, a sensitive and conflicted young woman, brought her to the attention of Hollywood. The film was praised for its complex narrative and the delicate interplay between its characters, with Binoche’s performance standing out for its emotional depth and authenticity.

In the 1990s, she continued to build her reputation, working with some of the most respected directors in world cinema. Her collaboration with Krzysztof Kieślowski in “The Three Colors Trilogy” is particularly notable. In “Trois couleurs: Bleu” (1993, a.k.a. “Three Colors: Blue”), she portrayed Julie, a woman who loses her composer husband and daughter in a car accident. The film explored themes of grief, freedom, and personal transformation, and Binoche’s portrayal earned her a César (the French equivalent of the Oscar) and the Best Actress Award at the Venice Film Festival. This role was a turning point in her career, showcasing her ability to convey complex emotions with subtlety and restraint, without resorting to melodrama.

Her success in European cinema did not go unnoticed across the Atlantic. In 1996, she starred in “The English Patient,” directed by Anthony Minghella. Her role as Hana, a nurse tending to a critically burned patient during World War II, won her an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress, and reinforced her position as an international movie star. The film was a momentous achievement, not only because it earned her an Oscar, but also because it cemented her status as a truly international actress, capable of seamlessly moving between French and English-language films.

The early 2000s saw Binoche continue to expand her repertoire. One of her most memorable performances during this period was in Lasse Hallström’s “Chocolat” (2000)—one of her very few forays into Hollywood, but she found her own balance between arthouse fare and big-budget Hollywood films—where she played a single mother who opens a chocolate shop in a conservative French village. The role showcased her lighthearted charm and comic timing, and the film’s success further boosted her popularity, earning her another Academy Award nomination, this time for Best Actress (she lost to Julia Roberts in “Erin Brokovich”).

“Chocolat” (2000, trailer)

What sets Juliette Binoche apart is her unwavering commitment to artistic integrity. Between successful features, she has consistently taken on challenging and unconventional roles, preferring to work with some of the most renowned auteur filmmakers from the past fifty years in small, independent arthouse films, rather than pursue a career as a Hollywood star with a string of commercial mainstream projects. Her collaboration with Michael Haneke in “Caché” (2005) is a prime example. The film, a psychological thriller that deals with themes of guilt and trauma, demanded an intense, internalized performance from Binoche. Her portrayal of Anne Laurent, a woman whose family becomes the target of a mysterious stalker, was widely acclaimed for its understated yet powerful intensity.

Binoche’s career has also been marked by her willingness to take risks and push her own boundaries. While she appeared opposite Steve Carell and Emily Blunt in the very successful romantic comedy “Dan in Real Life” (2007), she was also committed to do “Shirin” (2008), a daring cinematic experiment directed by Iranian filmmaker Abbas Kiarostami. From a fixed camera position, we are shown 114 close-ups of Iranian actresses, along with Binoche, watching a fictional film adaptation of an ancient Persian love story. “Shirin” observes their emotional responses to the film that we don’t see. For another Kiarostami film, “Copie conforme” (2010, a.k.a. “Certified Copy”), Binoche won the Best Actress Award at the Cannes Film Festival. The film was a departure from traditional narrative structures, blurring the line between reality and fiction. Binoche’s performance, which shifted between playing a stranger and a lover in a single conversation, showcased her extraordinary ability to navigate ambiguity and complexity.

In addition to her work in film, Binoche is also an accomplished stage actress and has appeared in numerous theater productions. She has played roles in classic plays such as Anton Chekhov’s “The Seagull” (1988) in Paris, and Harold Pinter’s “Betrayal” (2000-2001) on Broadway; critic John Heilpern wrote in his review of November 20, 2020, for the Observer, ‘There are three very good reasons to rush to see the new production of Harold Pinter’s 1978 “Betrayal” at the American Airlines Theatre—Juliette Binoche, Juliette Binoche and Juliette Binoche! No disrespect to her co-stars Liev Schreiber and John Slattery, but that is the way love goes.’

She created the stage production “In-I” (2008) with the British dancer-choreographer Akran Khan and brought it to various cities, including at The Munt in Brussels—for “In-I,” she learned to dance in four months. Binoche also demonstrated her versatility and skill in live performance once more with Ivo van Hove’s “Antigone” (2015) in Antwerp, among others.

Her legacy extends beyond her acting achievements. She is known for her activism and humanitarian work, particularly in support of women’s rights and environmental causes. She has lent her voice to numerous campaigns and initiatives such as Reporters Without Borders, and uses her platform to raise awareness about social and political issues. In 2018, she wrote a letter with astrophycist Aurélien Barrau, urging politicians to act firmly and immediately in tackling climate change and the collapse of biodiversity, and describing it as the ‘greatest challenge in the history of mankind.’

The letter—a call for serious action to save the planet—was signed by two hundred of the world’s most prominent artists and scientists, including actresses Marion Cotillard, Charlotte Rampling, Laetitia Casta, Catherine Deneuve, Isabelle Adjani, Carole Bouquet, Nathalie Baye; actors Alain Delon, Bradley Cooper, Jude Law, Willem Defoe, Ethan Hawke, Ralph Fiennes, John Tuturro; directors Claire Denis, Wim Wenders, John Boorman, Alfonso Cuarón, David Cronenberg, and many others. This commitment to making a positive impact reflects her desire to contribute to society.

Juliette Binoche wins an Oscar for Actress in a Supporting Role for “The English Patient” (1996)

Despite all her kudos and awards—including an Oscar, BAFTA, César, and three European Film Awards—Binoche has remained humble and grounded, often attributing her success to the collaborative nature of filmmaking and the importance of storytelling. Her passion for her craft is evident in every role she takes on, whether it’s a romantic lead, a complex anti-heroine, or a mother grappling with personal loss. This dedication, combined with her natural talent, has made her one of the most respected and beloved actresses in contemporary cinema.

Many years ago, she could easily have become one of Hollywood’s top stars, yet—as already mentioned—she prefers working with independent auteurs. With each role—no matter if it’s a mainsteam or arthouse film—she exposes her heart and brings a unique blend of sensitivity, intelligence, and emotional depth, captivating audiences and critics alike. So many of her films remind us why she’s one of the best actresses of her generation.

Finally, is there any film of hers that could be considered the ultimate Juliette Binoche film, or is there one performance in particular that could be singled out as her definite or most iconic screen role? No. It’s impossible to pick out one that stands out and that shows her unique talent as an actress. It’s impossible to make a choice, considering her stunning body of work up until now. One of the many films she did that hasn’t been mentioned so far, and that might be somewhere in the middle between arthouse cinema and mainstream, is the psychological thriller “Celle que vous croyez” (2019, a.k.a. “Who You Think I Am”), with Binoche captivating as always; her character is vulnerable and intense, and she captures the complexitis of a woman caught between longing and self-doubt. But then again, those are just a few of her many trademarks.

She once said, ‘Acting is like peeling an onion. You have to peel away each layer to reveal another.’ It’s one of her many memorable quotes on her craft as an actress and as a performer, and that’s maybe what it takes when she plays women pulling themselves through confusing situations, political intrigue, and romantic entanglements—or often all at once.

“Celle que vous croyez” (2019, a.k.a. “Who You Think Am,” trailer)

One of her latest screen efforts is the French historical drama and beautifully crafted culinary romance “La passion de Dodin Bouffant” (2023, a.k.a. “The State of Things”), which earned screenwriter and director Tran Anh Hung the Best Director Award at last year’s Cannes Film Festival. As possibly the most mesmerizing food film since Lasse Hallström’s “The Hundred-Foot Journey” and Jon Favreau’s “Chef” (both 2014), “The State of Things” is set in 19th-century France (mostly) on the grounds of a chateau, with Juliette Binoche as Eugénie—an unsung, genius-level private chef who is a quiet but skilled, commanding presence in the kitchen.

The film received international critical acclaim. The New York Times described the film in its January 4, 2024, review as having ‘elements of joy and sorrow, humor and intensity, beauty and light and shadow combine in a perfectly balanced experience,’ and on February 6, 2024, rogerebert.com praised the absorbing 38-minute opening sequence by saying, ‘The camera never stops moving. What we are doing, for 38 minutes, is watching these people [especially Juliette Bincohe and Benoît Magimel] cook, and, naturally, drooling over the meal being prepared before our eyes. This scene is an amazing feat, so much so that there’s satisfaction when you watch the guests in the dining room taste the food, savoring every bite, not even needing to say a word. The pleasure is palpable.’

Juliette Binoche, who turned sixty this year, will likely resist any future siren calls of Hollywood, as she did most of her career. Being the highly acclaimed performer that she is for the intelligence she always brings to her complex and varied roles, she has outclassed Hollywood. She simply doesn’t need it.
